چکیده
Introduction This paper looks at the possible evolutionary paths that the current printed scholarly monograph may take, paying particular attention to the ways in which technical, economic, and cultural factors may shape this evolution. It does not predict the demise of today's printed scholarly monograph, but suggests that it will coexist with a series of successors that will offer new points of balance among technical and economic constraints and opportunities and that will provide authors with new ways in which to communicate their research. For some works and purposes, the new forms will be superior; in other cases, the traditional printed monograph will likely remain the preferred form.
